These terms are the agreement between you and Halo Lab about the Familiar app and this website. They are short on purpose: Familiar is a private space for a conversation, and most of what follows simply says so plainly.
Agreement to these terms
By creating an account or using the Familiar app, you agree to these Terms of Service and to the Privacy Policy. If you do not agree with them, please do not use Familiar.
Familiar is provided by Halo Lab. These terms apply to the Android app and to this website alike.
Who may use Familiar
You must be at least 18 years old, or have the consent of a parent or guardian, to use Familiar. By using the app you confirm that you meet that requirement and that you can enter into a binding agreement.
Familiar is designed around one phone shared by the people having the conversation. There is no second-device mode and no way to invite anyone into your account, so please do not share your sign-in details with anyone outside the people you meet with.
Your account
You sign in with an email address, to which we send a six-digit code, or with Google. Keep access to that mailbox secure: anyone who can read it can sign in as you.
You are responsible for what happens under your account. The account email can be changed in Settings, and the account can be deleted there too. Deletion is permanent — the synced copy of your history goes with it.
Your content
The topics you choose, the moods you record, the notes you write and the summaries built from them are yours. You keep every right in them that you already had.
To run the service we need a limited licence: permission to store your content, sync it to your account, show it back to you and, when you ask for it, send a summary to the email addresses you entered. That licence exists only so the app can work. It is not transferable, we grant it to nobody else, and it ends when you delete the content or your account.
Acceptable use
Familiar is a private space, so the rules are short. You agree not to:
- use the app to harass, threaten or harm another person;
- attempt to reach accounts, data or systems that are not yours;
- interfere with the app’s operation, or probe, scan or overload our infrastructure;
- reverse engineer, decompile or resell the app, except where the law expressly allows it;
- use the app in breach of any law that applies to you.
Availability and changes to the app
We work to keep Familiar available, but we do not promise uninterrupted service. Features may be added, changed or withdrawn, and the app may be unavailable during maintenance or because of faults outside our control.
Because a meeting is stored on your device first, it keeps working offline even when our backend does not. Where a change materially reduces what the app does, we will give notice in the app.
What Familiar is not
Familiar gives a conversation a structure. It offers no advice, it does not interpret what you write, and no part of your summary is generated for you — everything in it comes from what you and the people you meet with typed or dictated.
Familiar is not therapy, counselling, medical care or crisis support, and it is not a substitute for any of them. If you are in distress or in danger, contact a qualified professional or your local emergency service.
To the fullest extent the law allows, the app is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Halo Lab is not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss, or for lost data, revenue or goodwill, arising out of your use of Familiar.
Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud. Where a jurisdiction does not allow one of the limits above, that limit applies only as far as that jurisdiction permits.
Termination
You can stop using Familiar at any time and delete your account from Settings.
We may suspend or end your access if you breach these terms, if the law requires it, or if we discontinue the app. Where we discontinue the app, we will give reasonable notice and a way to take your history with you.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as the app develops. The date at the top of this page shows the current version, and material changes are announced in the app before they take effect. Continuing to use Familiar after a change means you accept the updated terms.
